She shares songs boasting her love of her home, family, and friends while simultaneously illuminating the intricacies of being a woman in the Southern United States.
She's Got Grits! explores the impact the Trump presidency and the US anti-abortion movement has had on women in America and, in particular, in the rural South. It fuses autoethnographic research into original music within a genre that is both geographically and emotionally relevant to the material; country music.
Although inspired by female country artists such as Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, and Patsy Cline, the musical tone is very much Shelbi Forrest's own. She's Got Grits! offers a glimpse into the complex structure of American politics in the South and the ways in which feminism has either fit or not fit into that structure.
